Boom!

Shona jumped up out of her sleep, snatching Pink Lady from underneath her pillow. It had been a month since she had to get her from the strip club, drunk out of her mind. She heard a loud crash right outside. The last thing she remembered was falling asleep with a glass of Chardonnay in her hand.

It had been a long day at the shop. She was desperately looking for one more beautician, one that could braid. That would free up some of her time, allowing her to book more clients. She wasn’t friendly and she knew her past came with enemies.

She could do manicure and pedicures, but she hated touching feet. She hesitated putting up a help wanted sign, but did just before she left. Kaleela, like most Friday or Saturday nights, was out. Most times it was with one of her hoes or at a strip club.

For the clubs she frequented the most, Shona paid the owner monthly to call her up in case Kaleela got drunk and out of control. Her new favorite spot, Tastee’s, was her go to one on the north end but as of late Teddy Riley, the owner, told her he hadn’t seen her.

Shona didn’t know why he called himself that since he was 6’5”, weighing over three hundred pounds, but he did. She knew Kaleela would soon mess up, but like always, she waited for when she needed to bail her out.

After the last strip club incident, she eased up on drinking, so Shona stopped stressing her about rehab. Sadly, without saying it, she knew she was exactly what X called her, an enabler. She just didn’t know how to be anything different. All she knew was the streets and Kaleela; the streets she left behind the morning Chico walked out of her living room.

Hearing the loud sound outside, she soon learned that she was wrong. Taking off on her feet, she rushed to the front door, her .22 coming out first.

She almost fell, stopping short of Kaleela’s Tahoe that sat about three feet from the front door. She saw a trail of trees down and their flowerbed that was now destroyed. There sat Kaleela, laughing.

“Kaleela! Really?” she shouted, walking around to the driver’s door. “What the hell is going on? You’re trying to kill yourself or better yet, bring heat our way out here? You know black people either squatting or trapping in their eyes to live out here,” she gritted, snatching her arm.

She snatched back, sucking her teeth. “Damn, girl. Why are you yelling and shit?”

Shona could smell the liquor through her pores, her eyes bloodshot red. She knew talking to her was useless, but it didn’t mean she wasn’t about to handle her right then.

“Get your ass out,” she yelled, pressing the button that lifted her wheelchair from underneath the truck before it lowered back down. It cost about twenty grand to get that installed, but it was worth it, giving Kaleela some independence. Now, she had lost it as far as Shona was concerned.
